Press Release: With Only 10 States Left to Expand Medicaid, New Poll Shows Bipartisan Desire Among Floridians for Their State to be Next
Tallahassee, FL –Florida Decides Healthcare, the political committee working to pass a ballot initiative to expand Medicaid in the 2026 election, is excited to share new polling results indicating a strong bipartisan desire among Floridians for their state to be next in line to expand access to coverage. With only 10 states remaining to expand Medicaid, the recent poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy reveals that 76% of Florida voters support expanding Medicaid to 138% of the poverty level, providing health coverage for individuals making less than $20,120 and families of three making less than $34,300.
The overwhelming support for Medicaid expansion in Florida suggests that the proposal has the potential to surpass the 60% support threshold required to pass a constitutional amendment via ballot initiative in the state.
Significantly, the poll highlights considerable support among Republican voters, with 62% in favor of Medicaid expansion. This support reflects a growing trend of more conservative or Republican voters embracing Medicaid expansion, as recently demonstrated by the passage of Medicaid expansion by the Republican-controlled State Legislature in North Carolina last month and the approval of a ballot initiative to expand Medicaid in South Dakota by voters in November of last year.
Support for Medicaid expansion is strong across party lines, with 95% of Democrats and 74% of Independents in favor, showcasing a bipartisan desire among Floridians for their state to be the next to expand access to coverage.
Florida Decides Healthcare's campaign manager, Jake Flaherty, commented on the poll results, stating, "These numbers clearly demonstrate the growing bipartisan consensus among Floridians on the importance of expanding Medicaid. It's time for Florida to join the majority of states in providing access to affordable healthcare for all its residents. Florida’s voters know that Medicaid expansion is a smart choice not only for the health of our people but for the state’s budget and economy as well, and we're committed to working tirelessly to make this a reality through our ballot initiative in the 2026 election."
Florida Decides Healthcare is encouraged by these poll results, as they highlight the widespread support for Medicaid expansion in Florida. The organization remains committed to advocating for this critical issue and will continue to work towards securing the necessary support to pass the ballot initiative in the 2026 election.
